The VenaSeal™ procedure is the only non-tumescent, non-thermal, non-sclerosant procedure FDA-approved for use in the United States that uses a specially formulated medical adhesive that closes the vein. The procedure is administered without the use of tumescent anesthesia, minimizing the need for multiple needle sticks. Patients also report minimal-to-no bruising post procedure.
About the Procedure
The procedure is administered without the use of tumescent anesthesia, minimizing the need for multiple needle sticks; however, patients may feel some minor discomfort when a single needle is inserted to numb the site where Dr. William H. Johnson, MD will access the vein. Once the area is numb, the catheter (i.e., a small hollow tube) is inserted into the leg. You may feel some pressure from the placement of the catheter. Using ultrasound, Dr. Johnson will guide a catheter through a small access site in the leg and into the diseased area of the vein. Once in place, he will administer the VenaSeal™ adhesive at various points in a segmental fashion, and with manual compression, the vein will be closed. Blood is re-routed through other healthy veins in the leg. After treatment, the catheter is removed and a bandage placed over the puncture site. This unique approach eliminates the risk of burning or nerve injury that is sometimes associated with thermal-based procedures.
Benefits of VenaSeal™
- Medical adhesive seals the vein closed
- Only one needle stick of numbing medicine
- No compression stockings needed after the procedure
- Less bruising than other varicose vein treatments
